Environmental Policy
Despite good road access the peninsula still has an island quality and a sense that history and heritage are treasured. It is a community that welcomes visitors and new residents but keeps its village flavour. Because of this Russel is quite unique compared to staying in other areas. We are all on tank water and only some of the town on main sewerage. The pensinsula is a also conservation zone where birds like kiwi and weka which are rare elsewhere are once again flourishing and we have very few possums due to extensive efforts to keep them off the peninsula.
Without compromising your comfort and enjoyment we are trying to minimize our impact on the ecology and resources of the area.
Recycling
We recycle all plastics, paper, card, glass, steel or aluminium cans and take other recyclable materials to the local transfer station. We compost all vegetable kitchen waste and as much of the garden prunings and clippings as we can. Where we have to use plastic bags we try to use bio-degradable ones and we re-use any other plastic bags.
Water
In Russell we are all on tank water which comes from uses rainwater or bore-water. At The White House we are lucky to have an underground stream which never goes dry even in the mid of Summer, however so we still try to conserve this precious commodity by reducing laundry and replanting the garden with native Northland species which require minimal or no extra watering.
Electricity
Where practical we use energy saving light bulbs, automatic timer switches on lamps in common areas, and day night sensors in the garden lighting. In the future we plan to install solar water heating.
Chemicals
As much as possible our cleaning is chemical free.
