The White House is said to be one of the oldest houses in Russell and hence in New Zealand.
There is some doubt about the genesis of The White House/Te Wharema. One story holds that the house was built on Kawau Island in Auckland and shipped to Russell.
Records held by the Russell Museum suggest that the house was built for William Baker, who came ashore in the 1840's. It is called Te Wharema (literally, The White House) perhaps because it was established by Anglo missionaries or because the site was chosen because of the purity of the water, that still fills the well on the property today.
It is commonly suggested around Russell, that The White House/Te Wharema was a brothel in a past life, but as desirably colourful as this might be it is unlikely.
The Baker missionary family and their descendants owned the house for more than 100 years and they were all churchgoers. In fact it was bequeathed to the church by the last of that line, Amy Sharland, and it was from the church that Graham Fraser bought it
The White House/Te Wharema has always been a boarding house and that is really what it is today, albeit with a contemporary spin. In the past the transient, worker tenants stayed in the ten tiny and squalid upstairs rooms Stephen and Emma found when they bought the house.
